Welcome to Grade 3!!

Mrs. Stappler was born in Lahr, Germany, and move several times over the next seven years. She settled with her family on a farm just outside of Bow Island, Alberta where she spent the remainder of her school years. After High School graduation, she spent two years at the Canadian Lutheran Bible Institute in Camrose, AB., learning more about God and the study of the Bible. After that, she spent three years at Augustana University College, taking a Bachelor of Arts in Music. Later, she went on to the University of Lethbridge to take the after-degree in education. She was welcomed to MHCS in January 2003 as a part-time Grade three teacher. She then transferred to the junior high to teach the sciences and the music program for grades three to nine. Two years later, she once again transferred to grade three and has found it most enjoyable and rewarding working with the eight year old students.

Math
Students will be focusing on adding and subtracting two-three digit numbers with borrowing and carrying techniques. They will also be learning how to multiply and divide up to the seven times table. The grade three year is a government achievement test year and in math, they will be doing two tests. The first is a timed number facts test in adding, subtraction and multiplication. The second is a computations test that basically tests their problem-solving skills.

Social
The Grade three social curriculum is focused around four countries; Peru, India, Ukraine, and Tunisia. They will study the different cultures and traditions and then compare with Canada. We focus on how differences make us all unique and emphasis is put on acceptance of all of God's children.

Science
We study five different topics in Grade three science. Rocks and Minerals, sound, building with a variety of materials, testing with a variety of materials, and animal lifecycles.

Language Arts
This is the other Provincial Achievement Test subject. The students will be expected to be able to write a story using describing words and with the proper use of punctuation. Also they will be having to do comprehension test in that they will be reading a story and answering questions about that one particular story.

Bible
This is an exciting class in Grade three. We spend a lot of time getting to know who God is and how He works great things in our lives. We will review and learn about all the interesting stories that the Bible has to share with us.
