We are blessed to have an extensive library housed in the portables at the Medicine Hat Christian School.
Library Times:
Our librarian is part-time and for the 2007-2008 school year the library will not be staffed on Mondays but Mrs. Janz will be in most of the day on Tuesdays and Thursdays and afternoons on Wednesday and Friday. The library is open during most lunch hours and several recesses during the week.
What is in the library :
Easy Picture books and early readers....Elementary fiction....Junior High fiction....Non-fiction materials to support interest and research....Encyclopedias....Two computers for research and ARP testing....Atlases....Audio-visual materials for teachers....and much, much more.
All of our library books are entered on a data base and barcoded -- we still use sign-out cards for ease-of-access but the information is also recorded on our library computer program and all materials must be scanned after being borrowed.
ACCELERATED READER PROGRAM
- MHCS has run the Accelerated Reader Program (ARP) for many years as a reading incentive resource.
- ARP is a computer-based reading comprehension testing program that operates from our school library computers.
- Students from grade 3 - 9 are encouraged to read books appropriate to their reading levels, take a computer-generated test on what they have read and earn points.
- The bright yellow sticker on the spine label lets students quickly identify if the book is a part of the ARP program. Over 700 titles are currently included in the program. Most of the books are fiction but some non-fiction are ARP as well.
- Each book is worth a particular number of points as determined by difficulty and length of book. Points are accumulated as a student successfully passes each ARP test.
- Points may be "spent" on items in the "ARP stuff cupboard" -- bookmarks, lego, pens, pencils, notebooks, stuffies, candy, etc.
- READ and EARN
- Some classes will use ARP as part of the Language Arts.
Annual Scholastic Book Fair
Each September the librarian runs a Scholastic Book Fair as part of our back-to-school events and as a great event for purchasing new materials for the school library and classroom libraries.
Reading Challenge
Each year for four weeks during January and February the librarian runs a Reading Challenge. Students are encouraged to read for five times per week and an amount of minutes or pages as determined by the individual classroom teacher. Students who meet the minimum requirements earn rewards and each year a special Ice Cream Sundae event is hosted by the librarian for all the students who met the minimum requirements.
